Toyota All-Wheel Drive Models
What’s the Difference Between All-Wheel Drive and Four-Wheel Drive?
Although often used interchangeably, there are a number of important differences between how all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive systems operate. AWD systems use a front, rear, and center differential to distribute power to all four wheels of a vehicle. On the other hand, 4WD systems feature a drivetrain that includes two differentials and a transfer case to direct power to all four wheels of a vehicle. A simple way to remember the difference is that an AWD system is typically always on while 4WD is usually selectable and only operates when selected.
