Today’s roads can be unpredictable. Designed to protect drivers, passengers, and pedestrians from harm, Toyota Safety Sense™ 3.0 (TSS 3.0) was created to support a driver’s decision-making, overall awareness, and vehicle operation over a wide range of speeds under certain conditions. To help provide you with a better understanding of exactly how this comprehensive collection of technologies works, Germain Toyota of Columbus has assembled this informative guide.
Toyota Safety Sense™ 3.0
Next-Generation Safety
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were over 6.7 million reported crashes in 2018 – many of which were avoidable. Toyota Safety Sense™ 3.0 was created with the goal of preventing crashes caused by a delay in a driver’s recognition of the situation and their ability to react accordingly.
TSS 3.0 expands on the prior-generation TSS-C and TSS-P suites and features a total of six primary active safety and driver assistance systems:
- Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Daytime/Low-Light Vehicle and Pedestrian Detection, plus Daytime Bicycle Detection
- Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) or Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)
- Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with Steering Assist and Road Edge Detection
- Automatic High Beams (AHB)
- Road Sign Assist (RSA)
- Lane Tracing Assist (LTA)
Toyota Safety Sense™ 3.0 Key Features Explained
Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
This system is engineered to help mitigate or avoid impact with a pedestrian or vehicle in specific situations. Relying on inputs from both radar and a camera, PCS w/PD will provide an audible and visual alert. If you fail to respond in time, the system can automatically brake for you.
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) or Full-Speed Range DRCC
This system works similarly to a conventional cruise control system, in that it helps the driver maintain speed. With DRCC, this system adds a vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode which assists the driver by adjusting vehicle speed. This helps the driver maintain a preset distance to a preceding vehicle when the preceding vehicle is traveling at a lower speed.
Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
Lane Departure Alert determines if the vehicle is starting to unintentionally deviate from its lane and will alert the driver with audio and visual notification. When equipped and enabled, the system may provide small corrective steering inputs to the steering wheel for a short period of time to help keep the vehicle in its lane (LDA w/SA).
Automatic High Beams
Automatic High Beams can detect the headlights of oncoming vehicles and taillights of preceding vehicles. The system will automatically switch between high and low beams as appropriate to provide the most light possible and enhance forward visibility.
Road Sign Assist
Using an intelligent camera, Road Sign Assist (RSA) is designed to identify speed limit signs, stop signs, Do Not Enter signs, and yield signs. The system shows the signs on the Multi-Information Display (MID).
Lane Tracing Assist
When Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) is engaged and lane markers are detectable, Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) relies on vehicles traveling in front of you and/or the lines on the road to help you stay centered in your lane.
When Did Toyota Safety Sense™ Become Standard?
