Hybrid & EV Battery Life Cycle Explained
First Use
Toyota EV batteries are engineered to higher standards than most. In fact, they’re often capable of outliving the life of the vehicle itself. This means that at the end of its first use, engineers will determine whether the battery should be repurposed, reused, or sent straight to recycling if necessary.
Second Use
EV batteries that have been deemed suitable for a second use have several potential uses. Some may be repurposed for non-automotive use. Examples include powering a house, powering hospital equipment, and even part of sustainable energy solutions like solar and wind. Other times, batteries can be reused in vehicles such as Toyota Certified Pre-Owned hybrid models.
Recycle
Toyota is committed to getting the maximum life out of each hybrid or electric battery produced. Once their lifespan has reached its end, raw materials contained within the batteries are extracted for use in future battery production.
Production
Coming full circle, recycled raw materials from old batteries are then used in the production of brand-new batteries. Individual battery cells, the battery unit itself, and the finished product benefit from the recycling process. Afterward, the battery is installed in a Toyota vehicle and the process begins all over again.
