Development & Evolution

Toyota has remained an industry leader in terms of pioneering hybrid technology, beginning more than two decades ago with the debut of the iconic Prius. In years past, hybrid technology was reserved almost exclusively for small commuter vehicles with an emphasis on maximizing fuel economy and reducing emissions. However, Toyota engineers began to explore the possibilities of expanding hybrid technology to boost power and capability on larger platforms. The end result? Today’s Toyota Tundra and Toyota Sequoia models are now more efficient and capable than ever before. Combining a turbocharged V6 engine with an electric motor, the i-FORCE MAX is able to exceed the performance of the outgoing V8 engine previously found on the Tundra and Sequoia.

Outstanding Capability

With its electric motor cleverly integrated between the engine and the transmission, the i-FORCE MAX provides subtle assistance that can engage to conserve fuel or take on the full load of the powertrain. This allows the Tundra to deliver a total of 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, providing a maximum towing capacity of up to 11,450 lbs (when properly equipped). The i-FORCE MAX drives smoother, runs quieter, and boasts superior payload capacity compared to the outgoing generation’s V8. Its seamless integration means that the driver may not even notice the harmony between the engine and the electric motor under the hood. Barely perceptible under all types of operating conditions, this remarkable engine is perfectly suited for even the most demanding situations.

Bright Future of Hybrid Mobility

As the leader of hybrid innovation, Toyota remains committed to achieving its goal of complete carbon neutrality by 2050. Jay Sackett, executive program manager in product development at Toyota Motor North America (Toyota), remains encouraged by the remarkable progress that’s been made. “Our transition to a mobility company, to me, means finding new, exciting ways to connect people to their destinations,” adds Sackett. “With the new Tundra, we are moving further into the exciting future with electrification and uncompromised performance. The amazing thing with this powertrain is that now the customer does not have to compromise power and torque to have better fuel economy ratings.”
