About The Toyota Grand Highlander
The idea behind the Grand Highlander Hybrid is a bigger version of the Highlander Hybrid with more cargo space and more room for third-row passengers. But despite this, and the name, the Grand Highlander Hybrid is actually a completely different vehicle, even built on a different platform. It comes with more power, and with the available Hybrid MAX powertrain, a lot more power. With the Grand Highlander Hybrid, adults up to 6’4” can fit comfortably in the third row of seats, not a feature you’re going to find on many midsize SUVs. Toyota Safety Sense™ 3.0 (TSS 3.0), Toyota’s latest and most advanced suite of safety technology, comes standard on the Grand Highlander Hybrid, making it a smart choice for safety-minded drivers.
What the Critics Say
All-round visibility is also impressive with the driver enjoying a commanding position. Passengers in the third row of seats benefit from a slightly raised seating position that allows them to look over the top of the middle-row occupants, helping to avoid the claustrophobic feeling that some three-row SUVs can induce. That Toyota has achieved this while still maintaining sufficient headroom for adults is impressive.

Toyota Grand Highlander Features

Powerful And Efficient
The Grand Highlander Hybrid comes standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that mated to a hybrid powertrain for a combined rating of 243 horsepower. Available on the Limited trim, and standard on the Platinum is the Hybrid MAX powertrain, which pushes horsepower to 362, as well as 400 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive comes standard, but most configurations come with all-wheel drive. FWD variants come with a combined rating of 36 mpg**, with the more powerful AWD MAX-powered variants coming in at 27 mpg. That means the Hybrid MAX is both powerful and more efficient than the gas-powered version of the Grand Highlander. The best of both worlds.

Remarkably Well Equipped
Although Toyota emphasizes the larger interior as the thing that separates the Grand Highlander from the Highlander, it is also worth noting that the Grand Highlander also comes much better equipped. Things like heated front seats and all-LED external lighting come standard, as does the large 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay® & Android Auto™. There is standard three-zone automatic climate control, as well as 13 cup and bottle holders, and seven USB-C ports. Available equipment includes a hands-free liftgate (a power liftgate is standard), all-wheel drive (standard with the Hybrid MAX drivetrain), ambient interior lighting, and a power tilt/slide panoramic roof with power sunshade.

Advanced Safety
Safety has always been a major selling point for Toyota, and that’s why the Grand Highlander comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense™ 3.0 (TSS 3.0), the latest and most advanced suite of Toyota’s safety technology. Standard with TSS 3.0 are features like a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD), Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), Road Sign Assist (RSA), Automatic High Beams (AHB), and Proactive Driving Assist (PDA). Low-speed bumps are dings are easy to avoid too, thanks to an available Panoramic View Monitor, which gives you an overhead 360-degree view while maneuvering in or out of a parking space. The Grand Highlander isn’t just the best way to transport more passengers, it also keeps everyone safe.
