About the Toyota Grand Highlander

Despite the similar name, the Toyota Grand Highlander is built on a different platform from the Highlander and is much more than a Highlander that’s been stretched to make extra room for the third row of seats. That said, the Grand Highlander is bigger and offers a choice of either 7 or 8 seats with a third row of seats that will actually fit adults. It comes with a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine that makes 265 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. This is enough to make the SUV peppy but those wanting more power can check out the Grand Highlander Hybrid (reviewed separately). The Grand Highlander is also exceptionally well equipped with things like heated seats and wireless charging coming standard. Standard Toyota Safety Sense™ 3.0 (TSS 3.0) means that the Grand Highlander is a model of safety as well.

What the Critics Say

Regardless of engine, all Corolla buyers get a better-handling car than in previous years. It feels more planted and composed, with a smoother ride that handles bumps well on all but the roughest pavement. Toyota says its new platform is 60 percent stiffer, and it shows.” — Cars.com
The Corolla is a compact sedan, but there’s nothing compact about its interior volume. The dashboard doesn’t jut out too far from the firewall, leaving the cabin feeling plenty roomy for both driver and passenger. The story is even better in the second row, where a 6-foot-tall passenger will have no problem sitting behind a 6-foot-tall driver.” — Car & Driver

Toyota Grand Highlander Features

Toyota Grand Highlander Interior

Spacious Interior

A remarkably spacious yet upscale interior is a signature attribute of the Toyota Grand Highlander. While the Highlander does offer a third row of seats, these are generally only suitable for children. With the Grand Highlander, Toyota gives you the option of a third row that will actually fit adults up to 6’4” comfortably in a midsize crossover platform. There is more cargo space as well thanks to 20.6 cubic feet of space behind the third row and a massive 97.5 cubic feet with both rear rows of seats folded down.

Heated front seats come standard while upper trim levels are offered with both heated and ventilated seating surfaces for the first two rows. 13 cup and bottle holders and three-zone automatic climate control means everyone can be comfortable and hydrated. To top it off, there is wireless charging, seven USB-C ports, and two available 120V outlets so nobody ever has to fight for charging space.

Toyota Grand Highlander

Exceptionally Well Equipped

The Toyota Grand Highlander has a level of equipment that you would expect to find on a much more expensive luxury vehicle. There is all-LED exterior lighting and a large 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay® & Android Auto™ included as standard. Front-wheel drive and 18-inch wheels come while higher trims stand out with available all-wheel drive and wheels sized up to 20 inches. Also standard on most trims is an 11-speaker JBL® Premium Audio system that includes a subwoofer and amplifier. Even the power liftgate is standard with optional hands-free operation coming standard on most trims. The power tilt/slide panoramic roof with power sunshade is available for any trim and at night there is the option of ambient interior lighting.

Toyota Grand Highlander

Advanced Safety

Standard on the Toyota Grand Highlander is Toyota Safety Sense™ 3.0 (TSS 3.0), the latest and most advanced suite of safety technology. This includes things like Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD), Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), Road Sign Assist (RSA), Automatic High Beams (AHB), and Proactive Driving Assist (PDA). Additional optional safety features include Traffic Jam Assist, and Panoramic View Monitor, which gives you an overhead 360-degree overhead view during low-speed or reverse driving. Toyota’s award-winning safety technology means that you can take the whole family out in the Grand Highlander with confidence.
