About the Toyota GR86
There is no other car quite like the Toyota GR86 and that is very much by design. The GR86 is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, fastback sports coupe. It has a flat engine for a lower center of gravity and better handling. It is built for pure driving pleasure while still remaining affordable and easy to modify. The GR in the name comes from Gazoo Racing, Toyota’s racing division, and the team that has made Toyota one of the all-time winningest manufacturers in the history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. That race-winning expertise has been applied to the GR86 and makes it a pure driver’s car that enthusiasts will enjoy on every level. On top of all of this, the GR86 offers enough practicality to be used as a daily driver, not a feature you’re going to find in any other car that tries to compete with the GR86.
What the Critics Say
During our first test drive, we noted that the more powerful engine felt livelier and sounds better while the car’s razor-sharp handling provided thrills both on the road and on the Monticello Motor Club race track. Despite the car’s handling prowess, the suspension is forgiving enough to work as a daily driver.” — Car & Driver
The Toyota GR86 is one of the most entertaining and engaging sports cars you can buy, a rare island of affordable fun surrounded by a vast ocean of SUVs and trucks. Its front engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and light curb weight offer good balance and thrilling driving dynamics. Sports cars like the GR86 aren’t known for brutal straight-line acceleration, though. Instead, they excel at shredding curvy back roads. And the GR86 is perfect for drivers who want an enjoyable and inexpensive sport coupe and don’t mind its small dimensions.“ — Edmunds
What’s New for 2025
The biggest news surrounding the 2025 Toyota GR86 is the return of the popular Hakone Edition, last offered in 2020. This limited-production variant is based on the Premium trim and includes Sachs dampers, Brembo brakes with larger-diameter rotors, and your choice of either a manual or automatic transmission. Exclusive exterior colors and wheels are also available for these models which are restricted to just 860 examples. For the rest of the GR86 range, buyers will enjoy retuned shock absorbers, improved electric power steering, and reworked throttle mapping for easier rev-matching.
Toyota GR86 Features

A Pure Driver’s Car
At the heart of the Toyota GR86 is the 228-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine. This engine doesn’t just make the GR86 quick – the flat engine keeps the car’s center of gravity low. This combined with the exceptionally well-balanced chassis means that the GR86 delivers the kind of track-ready handling that you simply can’t find anywhere else. The GR86 has a track mode as well which changes the instrument layout to give you a racing-style tach, lap times, and precise engine and oil temperature readings. It also dials back the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) to give you more control on the track and a Full-Off Mode lets you disable the VSC completely. The suspension is track-tuned and a Torsen® limited-slip differential (LSD) comes standard.

Customizable Features
Toyota knew that an important component of building a car for enthusiasts was to make it easy to get your GR86 exactly the way you want it. Some of the more popular options, like the 18-inch matte-black-painted alloy wheels with Michelin® Pilot® Sport 4 tires, the color-keyed duckbill rear spoiler, and the 8-speaker premium GR Audio system come standard on the GR86 Premium trim. But this is only the start of what’s available. Aesthetic touches like black lug nuts or fender vent inserts are available along with functional options like a GR Air Filter or a GR Performance cat-back dual exhaust. For those who want more options, Toyota Racing Development (TRD) offers even more parts like upgraded brake and suspension kits, bigger wheels, and more.

Daily Practicality
Carrying groceries might not be the first thing that people think of when talking about the Toyota GR86. However, it’s important for anyone who will be driving their GR86 every day to know that it is able to handle trips to the store, potholes, and other daily realities of driving. The trunk offers more space than you’ll find in competing cars. These include models that don’t have a back seat at all, let alone one that folds down for extra cargo space. The GR86 is small but offers an interior that is easier for tall drivers to get in and out of than you’ll generally find a car this size. Fuel economy is rated at 20 MPG city and 26 MPG highway** for the standard manual transmission and goes up to 21/31** with the optional automatic.
